February 2 – 28, 2026

In the Special Exhibitions Gallery at Sedona Arts Center

Vision & Sound creates an educational experience and environment that broadens understanding and appreciation of African American visual and performing arts — including fine art, photography, music, dance, theater, film, and literature — for multigenerational and multicultural audiences. The program builds supportive relationships that encourage cultural equity throughout Arizona and beyond — recognizing that professional American artists of African descent have too often been overlooked and underrepresented.

Since 2022, Sedona Arts Center has led the program, partnering with organizations such as the ASU Center for the Study of Race and Democracy to promote cultural equity and highlight artists whose work has historically been underrepresented in Arizona. Under SAC’s leadership, Vision & Sound features gallery exhibitions, live performances, artist talks, workshops, and film screenings, creating a multi-sensory experience celebrating African American culture and creativity in the Verde Valley and beyond.

Across Arizona, Vision & Sound: An African American Experience invites audiences to engage directly with the work,
voices, and perspectives of its featured artists.

Through exhibitions, performances, artist talks, workshops, and community gatherings, the 2026 program offers multiple entry points for connection — from library and civic center exhibitions to live music events and hands-on educational experiences. The program culminates in the Vision & Sound Symposium at Sedona Arts Center, presented in partnership with the ASU Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, bringing artists, scholars, and community members together for deeper dialogue, reflection, and exchange.

Keynote Speaker: Brett Cook

Brett Cook is an interdisciplinary artist and educator whose work uses storytelling to distill complex ideas and creative practices that transform outer and inner worlds of being. His interdisciplinary installations — incorporating painting, drawing, and photography — tell pluralistic stories with broad representation. His public projects often include community workshops that integrate arts-based pedagogy and contemplative strategies, creating fluid boundaries between art making, daily life, and healing. Cook has taught at multiple academic levels and has been published in venues including Amherst College Press and Harvard University, and his work is included in public and private collections such as the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, the Walker Art Center, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has also served as cultural ambassador to Nigeria under the U.S. Department of State’s smARTpower initiative.
